Namaste,
Did not want to get up this morning! Worked on Misty's pictures for an hour or so, then Starbucks. Work was workish.... I had to wait on our delivery before I could do much.... We ran out at lunch and grabbed a salad, and then back to work. We left at 4:00 and I had a couple of errands to run, then Sherrie and I were working at a elementary school fall carnival at 6:00. We were running a photo booth. We would take the pictures, and then run over to our table and download them and print them. We only did 20 or so, but the carnival overall was great. I am really starting to stress about next weekend. I guess I need to get through this weekend, before I worry about next week!

Namaste,

Wow! What a day! I started out at 4:30 and headed out around 5:45. I hit Starbucks and then on to work at 6:00. I had to appear in Traffic court at 8:30 to dispute a failure to stop ticket. I plead not guilty and the was given a trial date. The officer looked at me like I was crazy, but I have photographic evidence that he could not see me stop! I went back to work, and then met my buddy Justin Booher at Louie's for lunch. Justin owns Vital Signs and he made me the worlds coolest banner for the "Quest!" I went back to work and at 4:00 I went to Weight Wise to drop off the banner. I ended up meeting with Dr. Broussard, and Sarah Evans.... They told me about a VERY, VERY Generous donation they (Dr. Walton & Dr. Broussard) are going to make to this years "Quest!" In addition to that they are going to donate their services for anyone I bring in as a scholarship patient! HOW AWESOME IS THAT?????? I wish there were words to describe how I feel about that. It really makes all of the hard work, all of the hours in the gym, all of the miles running, and biking are paying off. Weight Wise had a Nike Dryfit shirt made for me and they are donating bottled water with their label on it! They really have stepped up to the task! I love them all soooo much! On the other hand... I was told by someone very close that all of this "Quest" stuff was alienating me from people???? WTF??? I have made it a point to offer this to people, and if they do not want to participate.... No sweat! I understand, it's not for everyone, but Alienating???? I don't know! I got the lawn trailer and went and did mom's lawn. It will probably be the last time of the season, but wanted to get it done! I need to do mine, Ben's, and Riccardo's, in addition to the Edmond property, and the Midwest City property.... I have too much to do to let people get under my skin! I am attaching two pictures from my ticket. Top picture is the view from the stop sign, second picture shows where the officer was.

All my love!

Namaste,

Got up extra early and worked on Misty's pictures for an hour. Off to Starbucks then work. I kicked it hard core, then went to the doctor at 8:30. All of my labs that I had drawn on Monday were perfect, like there was ever a doubt!!!!! I went back to work, and then at 11:30 I went back to the mall and bought Sherrie the dress that I liked versus the dress that she bought..... I decided to get her the dress and then make her try both on and let mom and her friends help make the decision. In the middle of the afternoon I got a call from a reporter at the Oklahoman and he interviewed me for a story about the Quest, then we made arrangements for his photographer to come to the gym at 4:30 to take some pictures of me! We got busy at work but I snuck away. The photographer was there when I got there.... I put on my gym clothes then she shot 30 or 40 pictures. After she left I worked out hard for an hour with Mike Giroux. Today was Sherrie's friend Kristie's 40th birthday, so Sherrie cooked her dinner. Jodi came by to see Sherrie's dresses and guess what???? EVERYONE LIKED MY DRESS BETTER!!!!!!!! What does that say about my style???? Never mind don't answer that question. Anyway.... I need to get busy on Misty's pictures! Picture is of the fence at the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial.

October 6th, 2009 Final Nepal Journal Entry

10/06/2009 6:08am (Del) 7:40pm (OKC)

I have been spread out and sleeping for I guess 3/12 hours. Our flight path is taking us East of where we flew last time. We have 3900 miles to go at a speed of 523 miles per hour, we are cruising at an altitude of 34,998 feet, and the outside air temp is -57 degree’s. I am getting ready to edit pictures for a while, or until my eyelids get heavy again. There is a power outlet under my seat so I have electricity!

GOING HOME!!!!!!!!

10/06/2009 1:15 am (OKC)

We are ½ way through Quebec, and 1:57 from Newark. We are traveling at 509mph, at an altitude of 37,995 feet. We have 928 miles to go and it is -66 degrees outside. I will not get to see the sun on this flight because it is following us. I went back and stood in the galley earlier, and talked to some of the flight attendants. I ask her if I was going to get through customs, and make my connection. She assured me that the pilot on this flight was headed to Houston and since customs does not even open until 4:15 am, so I should not have any problems. We are getting close to Quebec City, 872 miles from Newark. I am starting to get excited. We flew into the Arctic Circle, pretty crazy. Spent several hours over Greenland. It is amazing to think about all of the places, and faces I have seen over the last month. All of the people who's stories have impacted my life, and I hope there is at least ONE person, who I have touched as well. I do know one thing for sure. There has not been one person, guide, trekker, Sherpa, office staff, hotel staff, stranger on the streets of Thamel, Lukla, Kathmandu, Gorek Shep, or Island Peak, that does not know I am in love with my family. Wife, daughter, son, mother, dog, cat, brother, sister, every friend, co-worker, etc… This is the longest I have ever been away, and I have never traveled to a place so distant, or dangerous, by myself. I think that is the thing that impacted me the most! I had a mission, a goal, and once that was accomplished, there was a new goal! To get home to the people I care about and who care about me as quickly as possible. I wanted to buy everyone a gift. I will be bringing everyone home a gift, the gift of love, the gift of service, my desire to help those who can not help themselves. To spend more time with the ones I love, and those who love me. To bring some joy to someone’s life to make someone smile, to wipe away a tear. My duty now is to be a giver. So many people gave so much to make this dream, goal, obsession, a reality; it is my turn to repay the favor. Sherrie, Jordan, Trey, Ricardo, Miriam, Applebee’s, Kay Morton, Chad Duggan, the Klinka’s, Brummitt’s, Howell’s, Mark and Mickey… I can’t name them all but you know who you are. My co-workers, Jodi, Cindy, and Gaymarie…. Without their support, this dream never would have come to life. Sheri Stoner, Dr. Walton, Dr. Keller, Dr. Brussard, and all of the staff at FBH, all of my boy’s and their families at 805! We are just about to head over Montreal, then into US airspace, coming in over Niagara Falls, then into New Jersey. Ready to get through customs, and to my next gate. 2:01 am in OKC!

10/06/2009 9:00 am (OKC)

It’s been a couple of hours since I was able to write. We were the first flight into Newark this morning arriving at 4:00am. We had to wait for 15 minutes for customs to open. That went really smooth, from there you go pickup your luggage, and recheck it into domestic flights. It was good to see my bags, there in the airport. At least I know they are in the right country. From there I went straight to my gate and it was time to board. I was in the last row, window seat. The flight was pretty nice; I saw the sun for the first time in 30 hours. It was amazing. I kept watching the horizon and when the sun peaked up I got a little emotional. I knew it would come up…. It always does, I just wanted to see it. It is a lesson in faith. You have to have faith that the sun will rise everyday, just as you have to have faith the God will see you through you daily struggles. There were so many times over the last several weeks, that without prayer and fasting, I felt closer to God than ever before. I was closer to God at an altitude of 20,305 feet, but what I mean is it takes faith to travel to the other side of the planet, to trek 200 miles, climb a Himalayan peak. It takes a boat load of faith to fly into or out of Kathmandu airport. So many people gave me tokens to take along…. Curtis ask me to say hello to dad! I am happy to say Dad, and Pepaw were going fishing, and Memaw was cooking fried squash. I wore four necklaces everyday! One was dad’s dog tags from the air force, with my 805 Fight Club dog tag. One was my strength necklace with a beautiful St. Christopher medallion that Miriam gave me. One was a beautiful St. Christopher necklace Mike and Marilyn Isbell gave me, and one was the dog tag that Sherrie, Jordan, and Trey gave me the day before I left. It say’s…. Live your dreams! On the other side it say’s Love Sherrie, Jordan, and Trey 09/15/2009. I did not take any of these pieces off during the trip. They were my since of security. Something else I did not let go of were the handkerchiefs, my mother gave me the day before I left. One was my Grandfathers, and one was my grandmothers. While I took thousands of pictures, none of them can do justice to the beauty of the mountains, and its people, or the struggle of everyday survival in Kathmandu. All they have is tourism, Industry is nonexistent. Government is pathetic. There are no public schools, libraries, clinics, or hospitals. It makes me wonder…. Is this where we are coming from or headed to. :-/ On a different note: Highlights…. So many to list. The first view of Mt Everest, just below Namche Bazaar. Ama Dablam, which I must say is the most beautiful mountain. The Sherpa people. They are soooo strong and proud. You will never see a Sherpa beggar! Those people really know how to work. My first view of Island Peak. It had been shrouded all day by clouds, on our trek from Loubuche to Dingboche and that evening when I was walking to the dining hall… The clouds parted and there it was…. Only about a minute! Everest Base Camp drew tears to my eyes. All of my life I wanted to go to base camp; It was the culmination of tens of years of dreaming, planning, and a couple of years of vigorous training. All of the new friends I met along the way. I have probably written this before but right now it seems appropriate…

Naba Raj Amagani, owner of Himalayan Glacier Trekking.
Prem Tamang from HGT, my friend, and guide.
Deil Sherpa, my porter and coffee mule.
Mr. Tenzing Sherpa, My climbing guide.
Temba Sherpa, Our climbing Sherpa, and cook.
Anu Sherpa, Owner of Himalayan Lodge in Namche Bazaar.
Dowa Sherpa, Anu’s son.
Cheeky from Japan.
Giles, from England.
Harriet, from New Zealand.
Nancy, from New Zealand.
Mark, from France.
Enrico, from Italy.
Jochen, from Malaysia.
The Japanese team.
The team from Denmark.
The team from Israel.
The team from Korea.
My boy’s in Kathmandu.
Wolf from Holland.
Coco from Germany.
Krista, Dan, Nicholas, and the rest of Felix’s group from Canada.
The Aussie team that went to Rum Doodle with us!
Suroge my guide in Kathmandu.
James, James, and Ceri, from England.
Christina from Belgium, and Dewar her boyfriend from Nepal.
Jeff Wilson from Canada.
Anna and Larry from Singapore.
Most of all… Wolf from England, My new brother!
I am probably leaving out 20 or more people. They will come to me. This is not the last chapter in “Mat’s Quest” it is only the beginning. My only question right now is…. How do I top this?

As of right now I have been traveling for 32 hours straight. I have no idea what Sherrie has planned for this afternoon. I would love to have some lunch, swing by the hospital and see mom, go pick up the kids from school, and give lots of hugs! 40 minutes outside of OKC…. Getting antsy! Eye’s burn, butt hurts… I wore khaki pants and black spandex shirt, new blue Everest base camp shirt, new balance running shoes for the first couple of legs of this trip home. After we boarded in Delhi, I changed into my sandals, and at Houston I changed into my “Quest” Shirt. I thought it would be appropriate. I am near the back of the plane, and I hope everyone is in a hurry to deplane… 33 minutes to go! I feel dirty, and a Jacuzzi or really long hot shower would be really nice. For the next couple of days I plan on eating like a pig, sleeping like a baby, and loving like a Frenchman!

10/06/2009 10:18 am (OKC)

Just came on the PA and said we are going to be delayed a few minutes, flying further west than anticipated due to weather. We are going to be 45 minutes late!

10/06/2009 11:07 am (OKC)

“TOUCH DOWN!”

“MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!”

33 HOURS, 40 MINUTES!

I ran from the gate to security, into Sherrie’s arms. I knew at that minute…. I would never do anything like that again. For the next five days, I pondered on how crazy, and dangerous, my journey had been. It was then I decided….. I have to get back to the Himalaya’s! It is a second home now! It is where I find my peace, my place in the world. Just like Anatoli Boukreev said to Anu Sherpa, “My cathedrals, my places of Worship!’

Namaste,

Woke up early because my dog and cat both wanted to go out! I got my shower and started editing pictures for Misty. The first 10 images or so are going to be quite time consuming, due to the fact that I am removing wrinkles out of the back of her dress. I did two pictures this morning and it took over an hour! Off to Starbucks and then work. I did audits all day then met my friend Amber Saunders at Louie's for lunch. I have not seen her for a year!!!! Back to work, to continue audits and then some IV work. I left at 4:30 and headed straight to the gym. Tyler, Tim, and Ian were just getting started so I dressed and sparred with them. After a couple of hours I came home ate a quick bite and took Sherrie to find a dress for the "Dance from Obesity Ball" that we are speaking at Saturday night. I am pretty tired, so I will be turning in soon!

All my love!

10/05/2009 7:30 am (KTM)

“I AM GOING HOME!”

Woke up at 6:30 and went to breakfast, I had 3 cups of coffee before going through the buffet line. I had a danish, 2 small bananas, and some cereal. After breakfast I went back to my room and took a long hot shower, got dressed then packed for the journey home. I went to the lobby at 9:45, and Naba was there. We talked and he re-assured me that he would come get me and take me to the airport at noon. I had Naba sign my banner and we took a few pictures together. I went for a walk just around the area right by the hotel. I took some video of the traffic with my cell phone. It was just crazy. I headed back to the Shanker and gathered my things.

10/05/2009 12:38pm (KTM)

Naba just dropped me off at the airport. This place is a zoo! I have to wait 30 minutes to check my bags, then a 3 hour wait at my gate. I CAN’T WAIT TO GET IN THE AIR!

10/05/2009 2:35pm (KTM)

There is no chance in hell I am getting home with my bags, unless there is a huge accident. I am curious how much money we spend in the US on the TSA, because it does not translate globally. I think right now I would feel more comfortable riding a scud missile through the heart of Israel, than boarding a plane in Kathmandu. The airport is just like the movie Golden Child! The airport has not been cleaned since the 30’s, and it smells like curry! I AM READY TO GET IN THE AIR!

10/05/2009 5:13pm (KTM)

Just now boarding the plane at KTM, heading for Delhi! The departure fiasco started with the computer system being down in the airport. We had to do everything manually, and since I had changed my flight Indian Air had no record of me being on their flight. Luckily I was first in line at the ticket window, and the passengers behind me were getting restless, so they ushered me through. After all of that with the computers being down it delayed our flight for an hour and a half. The holding area for our flight was nasty, and smelled like yak butt! I am very hungry right now, but there are no stores or anything here at the airport once you clear security. I have not really written much about what this trip means to me personally. I need to tell people how much they mean to me. … I don’t tell my mother how important she is, and how much she is appreciated. It may be because we work so closely, but I have missed her. My brother… I know he is busy, but we need to make time to do things together, while we can. As a matter of fact… We need to take our boy’s camping together, and roast hot dogs, and marshmallows! (We actually did this 11/08/2009, and had a blast!) My Sister… I know she loves me and my family! She supported me on this trip, and that means a lot! My friends… Too many to mention, but you all know who you are! My boy’s at 805 who got me ready for the physical aspect of this trip, as well as, financially supported me. My whole team of sponsors, my family in Tennessee…etc… Everyone I met on this amazing journey that impacted my life, and will continue to do so as I tell this story! Naba, Prem, Deil, Tenzing, Temba, Harriett, Giles, Cheeky, Wolf, Wolf, Felix, Enrico, Mark, Anu, Coco, Nancy, and soooo many others. We all had so much in common, Love of the environment, a serious challenge, being outdoors in nature, being at peace with the earth and all of God’s creation. Accepting other people, and their way of life without regard to their nationality, color, creed, religion, of any of the pettiness that we live in. It doesn’t matter who you are, how much wealth you accumulate, what kind of car you have, or how big your house is…. We are all part of the human experience. We need to find a way to love, and not hate, to give with our hearts, and not expect anything in return, to educate those on what we have learned, and most importantly to accept everyone without exception! I know it may sound stupid but…. I have been very emotional all day. Knowing this chapter of my life, the fundraising, organization, preparation, preparing equipment, physical training, and mental training, is done. To complete this journey all I have to do is navigate from KTM to Delhi, Delhi to Newark, Newark to Houston, and Houston to OKC! Back into the arms of my family and friends!
Mat Jones 10/05/2009 5:40pm (KTM)

10/05/2009 10:37pm (KTM)

We cruised at an altitude of 36,000 feet, and the outside temperature was -41 degree’s. The flight was pretty nice. The food was Indian, but hell, we are in India! Pray my luggage gets transferred correctly!

10/05/2009 10:37pm (Delhi)

Believe it or not we are being pushed back from the DEL airport right now. We were quarantined in the transfer area again when we got off the bus at the terminal. They took our flight information and baggage claim tickets, and they went and got our bags. Then they bring you your boarding pass two hours before your departure. You then go through security, and inside the terminal, are shops, and food vendors. I walked around the duty free shops, and everything there is in bulk. 10 pound bags of candy and giant bottles of liquor! All I wanted was a small snack. I went to Subway and got ½ a sub, with turkey, and cheese. I am in row 18, and there is no one in the two seats next to me so I will be able to spread out and sleep. How cool is that?

Namaste,

Did not sleep a wink... Mike Giroux text me at 5:00 and he was headed to the gym to train. He has a fight coming up on the 16th in Libral, Kansas. I went up and Travis was helping Mike train so I hung out for a few minutes and headed to work. I had to have lab drawn at 8:00, so I couldn't have coffee until after my lab draw. I went back to work and called my eye doctor. He got me in at 10:30 and then told me to go to a dark room for a couple of hours. I fell asleep, and woke up at 1:00. I text Jodi and she told me to stay home, so I cleaned out a couple of cabinets..... I laid back down and my headache was gone so I rode my bike up to the gym to see who was there. There was a pretty good class going on so I collected dues for a while then rode back home. I helped Trey cook dinner and now I am relaxing.... Yep, just relaxing! Picture is me and Wolf.... We met one year ago yesterday, and continue to communicate frequently! Wolf is coming to Germany to see Trey and I in March!

Much Love!
